Social Contagion

The anti-trans brigade goes on about social contagion being a thing with trans people, saying that if one person in a school transitions then you tend to get two or three more. While that original trans person could be a genuine trans person, they say that the others who transition did it because they thought it is the next cool thing to do and if you spend enough time talking to trans people or looking up trans things on the internet then you can be “transed” yourself and you then transition.

It was while reading the cesspool of hate (Mumsnet) that I saw one comment compare being trans today and living in your acquired gender as being seen as being the cool thing to do much like in the 1990’s it was anorexia. Now that got my back up, and I wanted to reach through the computer screen and give the person who posted that comment a darn good slap for the stupidity of it.

As someone who has lived with both being trans and anorexia my whole life, I can tell them that there is nothing cool about either of them. One of them lowers you to a second rate citizen where you almost have to fight every day to justify your very existence.

While the other is like a little voice in the back of your head whispering to you about what you eat and if it’s ok to eat that or if it’s bad to eat that. Or telling you to take laxatives to purge your body, or sticking your fingers down your…
